2020 Paul Jaboulet Aîné 'Les Grandes Terrasses' Cornas, Rhône, France
Named for the gravity-defying stone walls that overlook the village of Cornas, "Les Grandes Terrasses" is a powerful expression of Syrah from 20 to 60-year-old vines. This wine is grown on "gore" (decomposed granite) soils, which yield a wine that is both muscular and deeply mineral. Winemaker Caroline Frey utilizes traditional vinification with 100% destemming and 12 months of aging in French oak (20% new) to create a velvety, concentrated red. It perfectly captures the "scorched earth" intensity of the appellation while maintaining the refined elegance and fresh acidity that have become hallmarks of the modern Jaboulet style.
