2021 BODEGAS MAURO "MAURO" VINO TINTO DE LA TIERRA DE CASTILLO Y LEON SPAIN

Bodegas Mauro was founded by Mariano Garcia, the head winemaker at Vega Sicilia from 1968 to 1998, in 1978. The winery and vines are located in the village of Tudela del Duero, just outside the official lines of the Ribera del Duero DO. In 2001, his son Eduardo joined him on the production side after working at Cos d'Estournel and Ridge Vineyards. He started to change vineyard practices to organics, and they have slowly changed the élevage, introducing large foudres and reducing the amount of new oak. A blend of Tempranillo and a small amount of Syrah, which is well-suited to warm stony calcareous clay, this is Ribera del Duero with a twist, like a super-Tuscan. That little addition of Syrah tempers the Tempranillo's tannins, creating a richer more accessible wine.
