2020 Donelan Venus Roussanne-Viognier, Sonoma County, California
Donelan Family Wines’ 2020 Venus is a Rhône-inspired white blend built around Roussanne from two distinctive blocks at Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley: a small, rocky quarter-acre parcel and an east-facing slope. The Roussanne ripens slowly, often remaining on the vine until mid-October, developing aromatic intensity while retaining freshness. Five percent Viognier from Kobler Family Vineyard adds floral lift and richness. The wine was fermented with native yeast and aged for 10 months in neutral French oak, with no new oak, allowing the vineyard character to take center stage. Only 230 cases were produced.
The wine opens with honeydew melon, citrus cream and chamomile blossom, followed by honeysuckle, pineapple, underripe peach and wet rocky earth. Full-bodied and textured yet energized by bright acidity, it finishes with a savory, mouthwatering mineral quality. This distinctive Sonoma County white pairs especially well with scallops, halibut, crab and lobster.
