2024 8 Years in the Desert by Orin Swift Red Blend, California

The 2024 8 Years in the Desert by Orin Swift is a bold, expressive California red blend that celebrates the richness and versatility of Zinfandel. Created by winemaker Dave Phinney, this wine reflects Orin Swift’s distinctive approach to blending fruit from vineyards across California, including the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Moon Mountain District. The blend combines Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah, bringing together generous fruit, depth and structure. Aged for eight months in French oak barrels, 32% of which are new, it develops added complexity while retaining its vibrant fruit character.

The nose opens with aromas of black plum, boysenberry, Tellicherry peppercorn, cedar and musk. On the palate, wild blackberry and crisp pluot mingle with hints of fennel and slate, creating a layered profile that balances ripe fruit with savory complexity. Soft, structured tannins give the wine a smooth texture, leading into a lingering finish of milk-chocolate-covered raspberry. Full-bodied and generous, this California red is an excellent companion to grilled steak, barbecue ribs, roasted lamb, hearty pasta dishes and aged cheeses.
